As a young boy, Normand would build numerous tree forts. Most people think of tree forts that are above ground but not Normand. He would also tunnel underneath the trees. After doing this, Norm made many observations about trees and how they grow.
These simple investigations lead him to follow a career in arboriculture (the cultivation of trees and shrubs). Using scientific literature gathered from a variety of fields, he enjoys reading about plant anatomy, nutrition, physiology and soil sciences.
Taking long walks in the woods with his dog Finn, helps him process this information and come up with solutions to the many challenges of growing trees.
Ever since she was a young girl, Christine has always loved insects; especially caterpillars. She enjoys educating people of all ages about unique insects that live around us. She is passionate about preserving the habitats and host plants all insects need to thrive. Working alongside her husband, Normand Helie, she developed the Advanced Integrated Pest Management Program currently used to preserve young and old elm trees in the Boston Parks.
As a field scientist who has monitored various insects for several years, Christine is concerned with correct identification of insects and collecting accurate data in order to help others make informed decisions about plant health care.
You’ll never look at bugs in your garden the same again!
Join Christine Helie as she takes you on the fascinating journey of raising hundreds of praying mantises that become powerful soldiers in the fight to save our trees and gardens. Enjoy!
